Surpasses all Understanding

The phrase "surpasses all understanding" most notably describes the peace of God, as found in the Bible (Philippians 4:7). This peace is considered divine and incomprehensible, meaning that it is a gift from God that goes beyond human reason or comprehension and offers comfort and protection to believers even in the midst of difficulties.

The context of Philippians 4:7

  • The verse states: "And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus".
  • This peace is contrasted with anxiety and is received through prayer, providing a sense of calm and security that human logic alone cannot provide.
  • It is a state of tranquility that transcends ordinary circumstances, allowing individuals to maintain peace even when facing challenging situations.

What it means to "surpass all understanding"

  • The concept suggests a divine quality that is beyond the limits of human intellect and reasoning.
  • This peace is not earned but is a gift from God, providing a profound and unexplainable comfort that can guard one's inner self.
  • It's the experience of a deep sense of rest and oneness despite the chaos of life, according to one source.

How Do I Help others Overcome?

Galatians 6:1-3

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. [2] Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. [3] For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.

2 Timothy 4:2

Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

Isaiah 35:3

Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees.

1 Thessalonians 5:14

Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.

The goal of helping others overcome is not the victory itself, but helping them move closer to God. We are to help one another gently, humbly, persistently, patiently, encouragingly and tenderly.

Isaiah 63:7, 11-14

I will mention the lovingkindnesses of the LORD, and the praises of the LORD, according to all that the LORD hath bestowed on us, and the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which he hath bestowed on them according to his mercies, and according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses. [11] Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? where is he that put his holy Spirit within him? [12] That led them by the right hand of Moses with his glorious arm, dividing the water before them, to make himself an everlasting name? [13] That led them through the deep, as an horse in the wilderness, that they should not stumble? [14] As a beast goeth down into the valley, the Spirit of the LORD caused him to rest: so didst thou lead thy people, to make thyself a glorious name.

We can remind others of God’s past help in our own lives and in theirs. The remembrance of the Lord’s past faithfulness brings an anticipation of future faithfulness.

2 Corinthians 1:8-11

For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life: [9] But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead: [10] Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us; [11] Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf.

Ephesians 6:18

Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

We can pray for them.

Hebrews 12:12-13

Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; [13] And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.

2 Peter 1:5-8

And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; [6] And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; [7] And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. [8] For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

We can lead by example.

Romans 5:1-5

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: [2] By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. [3] And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; [4] And patience, experience; and experience, hope: [5] And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

Revelation 14:12

Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

Let this encourage God’s holy people to endure persecution patiently and remain firm to the end, obeying his commands and trusting in Jesus.

Acts 14:22

Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.

Galatians 6:9

And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

Philippians 3:13

Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,

We can face obstacles with an eternal perspective, knowing that God will overcome all pain and evil. We can also help each other face today’s obstacles with a view of the future! Walking together helps us overcome much more than walking alone.

What Kind of Temptation do Leaders face?

2 Samuel 11:1-2, 4

And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem. [2] And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. [4] And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house.

Leaders are often tempted to abuse their power for personal reasons, especially when everything is going well and people hold them in high regard. David had reached the place where he could enjoy an amount of freedom because he had won many battles and had a trusted leadership team in place. But the battlefront of temptation is one where no one else can fight for us.

Deuteronomy 17:16-17

But he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses: forasmuch as the LORD hath said unto you, Ye shall henceforth return no more that way. [17] Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.

1 Kings 11:1-4

But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites; [2] Of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love. [3] And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart. [4] For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.

Luke 12:15

And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

Many leaders are tempted to think that they are special and exempt from the standards that apply to everyone else. In fact, God established even higher standards in some areas for the kings of ancient Israel. We see in Scripture that leaders are tempted to accumulate money and possessions, and to move toward opportunities for new alliances and power. An excessive desire for any of these can draw leaders away from God’s path. Because leaders are human, they are subject to the same weaknesses as everyone else. Solomon was given wisdom beyond any man who ever lived (1 Kings 3:12), but he made the foolish decision to ignore God’s warnings and paid the price.

John 12:4-6

Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him, [5] Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? [6] This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.

Jesus had many followers, and as one of the Twelve, Judas was a part of the leadership team under Jesus. Like many leaders, Judas was tempted to take advantage of the trust given to him as a means of personal gain.

2 Chronicles 26:14-16

And Uzziah prepared for them throughout all the host shields, and spears, and helmets, and habergeons, and bows, and slings to cast stones. [15] And he made in Jerusalem engines, invented by cunning men, to be on the towers and upon the bulwarks, to shoot arrows and great stones withal. And his name spread far abroad; for he was marvellously helped, till he was strong. [16] But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction: for he transgressed against the LORD his God, and went into the temple of the LORD to burn incense upon the altar of incense.

2 Chronicles 32:24-26

In those days Hezekiah was sick to the death, and prayed unto the LORD: and he spake unto him, and he gave him a sign. [25] But Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit done unto him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem. [26] Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah.

The very achievements that God allows and enables can make us vulnerable to pride and the temptation to act purely on our own will. Uzziah’s success led to the presumption that he could act as a priest, something forbidden by God’s law. Similarly, Hezekiah’s pride led to prideful and unwise actions that displeased God. Fortunately for Hezekiah and for Israel, Hezekiah repented before the consequences took root.

1 Samuel 18:7-9

And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands. [8] And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom? [9] And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.

A leader who falls into pride often falls into jealousy as well. Saul’s jealousy toward David led him to try to kill a faithful and talented subordinate. Though David responded with restraint and respect, Saul’s reckless jealousy still splintered Israel’s loyalties and distracted Saul from his responsibilities as king.

Numbers 20:7-12

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, [8] Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink. [9] And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him. [10] And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock? [11] And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also. [12] And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.

Leaders are often tempted to become frustrated and angry with those they lead. Moses gave in to his anger with the people and forfeited the opportunity to lead them into the Promised Land.

What can we do to Pay more attention to God?

Deuteronomy 13:4

Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.

John 8:47

He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.

John 10:16

And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

We can depend on God. The more we depend on him, the more we will direct our attention toward him.

Isaiah 5:12

And the harp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts: but they regard not the work of the LORD, neither consider the operation of his hands.

Ezekiel 40:4

And the man said unto me, Son of man, behold with thine eyes, and hear with thine ears, and set thine heart upon all that I shall shew thee; for to the intent that I might shew them unto thee art thou brought hither: declare all that thou seest to the house of Israel.

We can think more about God. When God is a regular part of our thoughts, we will be more aware of what he is doing.

1 Kings 19:11-13

And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: [12] And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. [13] And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?

Psalm 46:10

Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

We can quietly listen for God. A still, quiet spirit helps us focus our attention to God. A whispering God is more powerful than a shouting neighbor.

Psalm 85:8

I will hear what God the LORD will speak: for he will speak peace unto his people, and to his saints: but let them not turn again to folly.

Proverbs 4:20

My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.

Hebrews 2:1

Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.

Hebrews 3:7, 15

Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice, [15] While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.

We should make listening to God a priority worthy of our immediate attention. If God truly is your God, you will listen to him.

Psalm 78:1

Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.

Matthew 11:15

He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Matthew 13:12

For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.

We can choose the attitude of being willing to do whatever God wants. Our willing attitude will help us pay attention to God. Listening is an attitude, not merely an action. As our respect for someone withers, so will our listening. As our love for someone grows, so will our listening.

Isaiah 50:5

The Lord GOD hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back.

Jeremiah 13:15

Hear ye, and give ear; be not proud: for the LORD hath spoken.

Jeremiah 17:23

But they obeyed not, neither inclined their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear, nor receive instruction.

Ezekiel 2:7

And thou shalt speak my words unto them, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear: for they are most rebellious.

Ezekiel 12:2

Son of man, thou dwellest in the midst of a rebellious house, which have eyes to see, and see not; they have ears to hear, and hear not: for they are a rebellious house.

We can be humble and submissive before God. A rebellious or proud spirit can keep us from paying attention to God. Rebellion and pride turn our affections inward. Humility turns our affections outward.

1 Samuel 15:22

And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

Isaiah 42:20

Seeing many things, but thou observest not; opening the ears, but he heareth not.

Ezekiel 33:31

And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.

James 1:22-23

But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. [23] For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

We can obey God. If we think God is worth obeying, we will. If we think he is not worth obeying, we won’t. We always confirm our commitments by our actions.

What are Some Dangers that Come with Routine?

Jeremiah 13:23

Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil.

2 Peter 2:19

While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.

A huge danger of some routines is that bad habits and sinful lifestyle choices can become controlling and overwhelm the good things we are doing.

Ezekiel 33:31

And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.

Matthew 6:5-7

And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. [6] But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. [7] But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

Simply going through the motions of worshiping God is dangerous.

Should I be held Responsible for Things that are not My Fault?

Genesis 3:12-13

And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. [13] And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

Genesis 16:5

And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.

Exodus 32:22-24

And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that they are set on mischief. [23] For they said unto me, Make us gods, which shall go before us: for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him. [24] And I said unto them, Whosoever hath any gold, let them break it off. So they gave it me: then I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.

Matthew 27:24

When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.

Pilate saw that he wasn’t getting anywhere and that a riot was developing. So he sent for a bowl of water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this man. The responsibility is yours!”

An honest and humble assessment of your behavior may turn up some things that you really are responsible for. Shifting blame to others will never go well.

1 Chronicles 21:7-8, 17

And God was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Israel. [8] And David said unto God, I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly. [17] And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be on me, and on my father's house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.

Sometimes it seems like God punishes innocent people for the sins of the guilty. But in reality, the natural consequences of sin almost always affect others, even innocent people.

Numbers 14:20-23

And the LORD said, I have pardoned according to thy word: [21] But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD. [22] Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice; [23] Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it:

The the Lord said, “But as surely as I live, and as surely as the earth is filled with the Lord’s glory, not one of these people will ever enter that land.”

Joshua 7:1, 4

But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against the children of Israel. [4] So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai.

Deuteronomy 21:1-9

If one be found slain in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it, lying in the field, and it be not known who hath slain him: [2] Then thy elders and thy judges shall come forth, and they shall measure unto the cities which are round about him that is slain: [3] And it shall be, that the city which is next unto the slain man, even the elders of that city shall take an heifer, which hath not been wrought with, and which hath not drawn in the yoke; [4] And the elders of that city shall bring down the heifer unto a rough valley, which is neither eared nor sown, and shall strike off the heifer's neck there in the valley: [5] And the priests the sons of Levi shall come near; for them the LORD thy God hath chosen to minister unto him, and to bless in the name of the LORD; and by their word shall every controversy and every stroke be tried: [6] And all the elders of that city, that are next unto the slain man, shall wash their hands over the heifer that is beheaded in the valley: [7] And they shall answer and say, Our hands have not shed this blood, neither have our eyes seen it. [8] Be merciful, O LORD, unto thy people Israel, whom thou hast redeemed, and lay not innocent blood unto thy people of Israel's charge. And the blood shall be forgiven them. [9] So shalt thou put away the guilt of innocent blood from among you, when thou shalt do that which is right in the sight of the LORD.

Often the whole community shares responsibility for what an individual or group of individuals has done.

Deuteronomy 24:16

The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin.

Parents must not be put to death for the sins of their children, nor the children for the sins of their parents. Those worthy of death must be executed for their own crimes.

Ezekiel 18:1-4

The word of the LORD came unto me again, saying, [2] What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge? [3] As I live, saith the Lord GOD, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel. [4] Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

In terms of judgment before God, a person is held responsible only for his or her own sins. God will not judge us eternally for someone else’s sins. But unfortunately, sin has consequences that affect others. Sin almost always hurts others and not just the sinner.

Numbers 14:24

But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.

Those who are clearly innocent should not be intentionally punished with the guilty.

Is God Hiding Himself and His Plans?

Deuteronomy 29:29

The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

Romans 16:25

Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,

Ephesians 1:9

Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:

Colossians 1:15

Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:

Hebrews 1:3

Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

God reveals himself through his Son, Jesus Christ, as the fulfillment of his salvation plan for all people.

Psalm 119:160

Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.

Isaiah 45:19

I have not spoken in secret, in a dark place of the earth: I said not unto the seed of Jacob, Seek ye me in vain: I the LORD speak righteousness, I declare things that are right.

Isaiah 48:6

Thou hast heard, see all this; and will not ye declare it? I have shewed thee new things from this time, even hidden things, and thou didst not know them.

Daniel 2:22

He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.

God knows every secret and every lie, but he only speaks the truth. He has shared many great and important truths with us. The question is, are we listening?

John 18:19-21

The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine. [20] Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing. [21] Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.

Ephesians 1:9-10

Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: [10] That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:

God does not hide himself from us. In fact, he has revealed his grand plan to us. The purpose of this plan—the gospel—is to restore our relationship with him so we can live with him eternally.

Deuteronomy 4:29

But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.

1 Chronicles 28:9

And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.

Psalm 27:8

When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek.

Matthew 7:7-8

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: [8] For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

God wants us to know him and uses a variety of ways to reveal himself to all who seek him. When we try to hide from God, we often blame God for the distance between us, claiming that he is the one doing the hiding. God is always trying to reveal himself to us—but do we really want to find him? To find him means facing a radical life change. Many of us are afraid of that. Sometimes, we may need to ask ourselves if we are honestly searching for God.

Romans 1:20

For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

God reveals himself through his creation. The evidence of an all-powerful God is all around us.

John 16:13-14

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. [14] He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

1 Corinthians 2:10

But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

God reveals himself and his wisdom through his Spirit. When we fail to understand the Word of God, perhaps it is because we have failed to respond to the voice of the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 3:9

And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:

God reveals his messages to us through one another.

Psalm 78:2

I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:

Matthew 11:25

At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.

Matthew 13:35

That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.

Luke 8:10

And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand.

Luke 9:45

But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.

Luke 10:21

In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.

John 16:25-30

These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father. [26] At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you: [27] For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. [28] I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father. [29] His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb. [30] Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.

God both hides and reveals his truth through parables, teachings, and his own Word. Whether his truth is revealed or hidden lies not with the sender or the message but with the heart of the receiver.

Deuteronomy 31:17-18

Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall befall them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us, because our God is not among us? [18] And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods.

Job 23:1-10

Then Job answered and said, [2] Even to day is my complaint bitter: my stroke is heavier than my groaning. [3] Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat! [4] I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments. [5] I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would say unto me. [6] Will he plead against me with his great power? No; but he would put strength in me. [7] There the righteous might dispute with him; so should I be delivered for ever from my judge. [8] Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him: [9] On the left hand, where he doth work, but I cannot behold him: he hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him: [10] But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.

Psalm 10:1

Why standest thou afar off, O LORD? why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble?

Psalm 27:9

Hide not thy face far from me; put not thy servant away in anger: thou hast been my help; leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.

Psalm 69:17

And hide not thy face from thy servant; for I am in trouble: hear me speedily.

Psalm 89:46

How long, LORD? wilt thou hide thyself for ever? shall thy wrath burn like fire?

Lamentations 3:44

Thou hast covered thyself with a cloud, that our prayer should not pass through.

Luke 18:1, 7

And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; [7] And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them?

Hebrews 11:27

By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.

There are many reasons why God may seem far away. Sometimes (such as with Israel), living lives of sin makes God unwelcome. In that case, we should repent and seek God’s forgiveness. But sin is not the only reason we may feel this way. Sometimes (such as with Job), we experience great tragedy, and God doesn’t answer our prayers when we expect him to. This may leave us feeling ignored or unloved by God—but that doesn’t mean those feelings are truly justified. Jesus tells a parable of a widow who kept begging a corrupt judge for justice. In time, the judge relented, if only to get the widow to leave him alone. Jesus says that if an unrighteous human judge would eventually give justice, how much more will God give justice to those who keep crying out to him?

What is the difference between the Sabbath and Sunday?

And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. [43] And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. [44] And all that believed were together, and had all things common; [45] And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. [46] And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, [47] Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

We often forget that for several decades after Jesus’ resurrection, the majority of his followers were devout Jews. They saw Jesus as the fulfillment of all God had promised in the Old Testament, and they continued to practice Judaism the way Jesus had, meeting in the synagogue and Temple and keeping the Sabbath, in addition to meeting in homes and learning from the apostles.

Acts 13:14-15, 42-49

But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down. [15] And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Ye men and brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, say on. [42] And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath. [43] Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God. [44] And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God. [45] But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. [46] Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. [47] For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. [48] And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed. [49] And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region.

From the earliest days of his missionary journeys, Paul always began work in a new place by joining Sabbath worship at the local synagogue or some other gathering of Jewish worshipers. He preached Christ from the Old Testament and shared the gospel both to Jews and God-fearing Gentiles who were in the synagogue.

Acts 16:12-15

And from thence to Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony: and we were in that city abiding certain days. [13] And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither. [14] And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul. [15] And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.

It appears that Philippi had a very small population of Jews (it required 10 Jewish men to establish a synagogue in a city), but Jews and God-fearers met by the river there on the Sabbath in hopes of eventually establishing a synagogue. Paul began his ministry in Philippi with this group.

Acts 17:1-4

Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews: [2] And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures, [3] Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ. [4] And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.

Throughout the book of Acts we see the gradual shift from a Jewish-centered Sabbath to a Jesus-centered Sunday. By his second missionary journey, Paul had established the pattern of beginning his work at the local synagogue and then expanding to the wider, largely Gentile, community. For much of this time, Jesus’ followers actually kept both days, preserving the day of rest as well as making the first day of the week a celebration of Jesus’ resurrection because he rose on Sunday morning.

How can Complacency Lead me to Sin?

James 4:17

Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

To know what is right and then be complacent or unwilling to do it is sin. God takes your actions seriously. It is not enough to avoid doing wrong. God wants you to be proactive about doing what is right.

Revelation 3:15-16

I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. [16] So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

Complacency leads to indifference, which leads to idleness. To stand for nothing is to not care. And to not care is to be apathetic and complacent about the needs of others. Complacency stands in stark contrast to God’s command to love and care for those around us.

Judges 16:16-17

And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed unto death; [17] That he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother's womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.

Complacency makes you vulnerable to the strategies and temptation of Satan. Samson had become so complacent about his God-given responsibility as a leader that he gave in to Delilah’s nagging and told her the secret to his strength. He thought it wouldn’t matter; he thought everything would still be just fine. Samson’s complacency was a sin, and when he disobeyed God’s command to keep the source of his strength secret, he lost his strength and let down his entire nation.

1 Kings 11:1-3

But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites; [2] Of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love. [3] And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart.

Proverbs 1:30-33

They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. [31] Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. [32] For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them. [33] But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.

You will neglect God’s Word if you are complacent toward it. Then you will not know what it says and how it can help you avoid danger. Solomon’s complacency toward obeying God’s commands led him into sin, with devastating consequences.

How Might I Best Handle Peer Pressure?

1 Kings 22:13-14

And the messenger that was gone to call Micaiah spake unto him, saying, Behold now, the words of the prophets declare good unto the king with one mouth: let thy word, I pray thee, be like the word of one of them, and speak that which is good. [14] And Micaiah said, As the LORD liveth, what the LORD saith unto me, that will I speak.

Proverbs 4:27

Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.

Matthew 1:20, 24

But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. [24] Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:

Luke 20:21

And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly:

Acts 4:16-20

Saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it. [17] But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name. [18] And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. [19] But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye. [20] For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.

2 Corinthians 6:8-10

By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true; [9] As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed; [10] As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.

Galatians 6:8-10

For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. [9] And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. [10] As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

Realize that negative pressure from people and culture may come with painful consequences if you fail to reject it. Train yourself to live by God’s standards, which will help you develop the conviction to keep strong even when tempted. The Bible contains the absolute truths by which all people should live, the truths that lead you on the right path.

Exodus 23:2

Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause to decline after many to wrest judgment:

Psalm 1:1-2

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. [2] But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

Proverbs 14:7

Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not in him the lips of knowledge.

Proverbs 24:1

Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them.

Proverbs 27:17

Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.

1 Corinthians 15:33

Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.

Perhaps the most obvious and most practical way to resist negative peer pressure is to choose wise peers. If you can’t resist friends who constantly lead you to do wrong, you might need to stay away from them until you have the strength to resist their temptations. Always consider God’s Word as the ultimate test for pressure, taking delight in knowing what God says.

Psalm 119:143

Trouble and anguish have taken hold on me: yet thy commandments are my delights.

Luke 20:21

And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly:

Acts 17:11

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

Before you do what others want, first think about what God wants and what God says in his Word. When you take time to consider his advice, as found in the Bible, you will know if your peers are trying to persuade you to do the wrong thing. It is easier to resist bad influences when you are grounded in God’s Word and committed to obeying it.

Matthew 14:9

And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.

Never let pride or the risk of embarrassment keep you from making the right choice. Keep your motives pure. Pride and embarrassment are poor motives for your choices.

Psalm 101:4

A froward heart shall depart from me: I will not know a wicked person.

Isaiah 8:11

For the LORD spake thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying,

Remember that thinking like everyone else is not always the right way to think. The crowd doesn’t always move in the right direction. Truth found in God’s Word is never just one of several opinions to be considered in making a decision. What Scripture teaches is always reliable in the face of overwhelming opposition.

Genesis 39:10

And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.

Proverbs 1:10

My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.

1 Corinthians 10:13

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Hebrews 2:18

For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

Hebrews 4:15

For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

James 4:7

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Everyone goes through times of temptation. Even Jesus was repeatedly tempted. How we deal with temptation keeps us from or leads us into sin. We resist or yield to temptation depending on how important God is to us. When God is our top priority, we will be close enough to him to notice how he is showing us ways to resist the temptations bombarding us.

How can my actions be beautiful?

Romans 10:14-15

How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? [15] And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

Paul quotes the first half of Isaiah 52:7 to point out that telling others about Jesus is itself a beautiful action.

Exodus 35:25-35

And all the women that were wise hearted did spin with their hands, and brought that which they had spun, both of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, and of fine linen. [26] And all the women whose heart stirred them up in wisdom spun goats' hair. [27] And the rulers brought onyx stones, and stones to be set, for the ephod, and for the breastplate; [28] And spice, and oil for the light, and for the anointing oil, and for the sweet incense. [29] The children of Israel brought a willing offering unto the LORD, every man and woman, whose heart made them willing to bring for all manner of work, which the LORD had commanded to be made by the hand of Moses. [30] And Moses said unto the children of Israel, See, the LORD hath called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah; [31] And he hath filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship; [32] And to devise curious works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, [33] And in the cutting of stones, to set them, and in carving of wood, to make any manner of cunning work. [34] And he hath put in his heart that he may teach, both he, and Aholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. [35] Them hath he filled with wisdom of heart, to work all manner of work, of the engraver, and of the cunning workman, and of the embroiderer, in blue, and in purple, in scarlet, and in fine linen, and of the weaver, even of them that do any work, and of those that devise cunning work.

Don’t overlook the reality that God often chooses to equip some people with special abilities intended for godly use. As we develop skills and abilities that we can use to serve God, we may hone those gifts by producing beautiful things for others. Consider how God has gifted you, and then imagine ways you might use your gifts to serve him.

1 Timothy 2:10

But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

Beautiful conduct is the fruit of godly thoughts and character. Others are far more likely to pay attention to what we say about our relationship with God if they can see how it positively shapes our relationships with them. Godly actions have a wider and longer effect than mere words.

What can make me more attractive and appealing?

1 Timothy 4:7-8

But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. [8] For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.

1 Timothy 2:9-10

In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; [10] But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

1 Peter 3:3-6

Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; [4] But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. [5] For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: [6] Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.

Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty that depends on fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes. You should be known for the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God. That is the way the holy women of old made themselves beautiful. They trusted God and accepted the authority of their husbands. For instance, Sarah obeyed her husband, Abraham, when she called him her master. You are her daughters when you do what is right without fear of what your husbands might do.

Isaiah 52:7

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!

Proverbs 19:22

The desire of a man is his kindness: and a poor man is better than a liar.

Loyalty makes a person attractive. And it is better to be poor than dishonest.

Proverbs 3:3

Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:

Living out our inner beauty makes us more attractive. Outer beauty makes a good first impression, but inner beauty makes a lasting impression.

Are there ways in which I should allow myself to be more vulnerable?

Genesis 2:25

And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

1 John 4:11-19

Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. [12] No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. [13] Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. [14] And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. [15] Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. [16] And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. [17] Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. [18] There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. [19] We love him, because he first loved us.

For those who are married, the next most vulnerable relationship (next to our relationship with God) should be with our spouse. There should be nothing hidden between two people who are married. The description of Adam and Eve’s original intimacy takes us back before the Fall, but their trust and vulnerability toward each other was complicated by their sin. Sin separates us from God and the people closest to us; it leads us to fear and distrust others. But John informs us that God’s Spirit and love move us away from fear (of judgment and rejection) toward transparency and responding with unselfish love.

Psalm 139:23-24

Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: [24] And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

2 Timothy 3:16

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Hebrews 4:12-13

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. [13] Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

It is essential to open our hearts and lives fully to God and let him do his work in us to help us become all he created us to be. This includes being confronted, reproved, and corrected by God through his Word. If we pull away from God and don’t allow him to help us, we will never reach our God-given potential.

Matthew 5:11-12

Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. [12] Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Hebrews 10:33

Partly, whilst ye were made a gazingstock both by reproaches and afflictions; and partly, whilst ye became companions of them that were so used.

We are to allow ourselves to be vulnerable enough to experience humiliation and ridicule for believing in Jesus.

2 Corinthians 11:27

In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.

We must make ourselves vulnerable enough to be willing to accept difficulty and danger in order to serve God.

Why would God want to forgive me for a terrible sin?

Numbers 14:19

Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.

Ezekiel 18:23

Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord GOD: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?

Luke 15:10

Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.

Romans 5:8

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

God’s love is his motivation for his forgiveness. He wants a relationship with us more than anything; and he is happy to forgive us for any sin, no matter how terrible, if we simply long for the same relationship with him and seek his forgiveness. When a sinner is forgiven, heaven is filled with rejoicing!

What Causes me to make mistakes?

Genesis 16:3

And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.

Exodus 32:1

And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

Joshua 8:14

And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he wist not that there were liers in ambush against him behind the city.

Our impatience often leads to poor life choices. When we hurry to act without checking our assumptions, it is easy to make a serious mistake.

Proverbs 19:2-3

Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth. [3] The foolishness of man perverteth his way: and his heart fretteth against the LORD.

When we don’t know all the facts, we may overreact and make additional mistakes.

1 Samuel 13:8-14

And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him. [9] And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering. [10] And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him. [11] And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash; [12] Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering. [13] And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever. [14] But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.

Serious mistakes can be caused by the pressure of our fears.

Genesis 13:10-13

And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar. [11] Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other. [12] Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom. [13] But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.

Often mistakes are created by the selfish pursuit of our own agenda. When our choices are guided primarily by selfish ambition or a desire for physical fulfillment, we are more likely to make a mistake.

Genesis 25:29-34

And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint: [30] And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom. [31] And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright. [32] And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? [33] And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob. [34] Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

Feeling extremely tired and hungry, Esau traded his future for a bowl of stew. Lack of sleep, poor eating habits, or overwork to the point of exhaustion will make us more vulnerable to poor decisions.

1 Kings 12:1-11

And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king. [2] And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;) [3] That they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying, [4] Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee. [5] And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed. [6] And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people? [7] And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever. [8] But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him: [9] And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter? [10] And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins. [11] And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

Proverbs 12:15

The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.

Rejecting the advice of wise counselors can lead to mistakes.

Will God really fill the emptiness of my life?

John 6:35

And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

Jesus is the nourishment that our souls crave. A relationship with him truly satisfies our deepest hunger. He meets our needs, guides us in his plans for us, and offers us peace of mind and eternal life.

John 4:13-14

Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: [14] But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

Jesus fills our emptiness with his presence. He satisfies our thirst, now and forever.

Isaiah 55:1-2

Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. [2] Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.

We make substantial investments of time, energy, and financial resources in possessions, clothes, popularity, prestige, and power. But relying on this “food” to fill our lives with meaning will leave us feeling empty. We freely receive what truly satisfies—God himself—by grace through faith.

Promises from God

Leviticus 26:6

And I will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid: and I will rid evil beasts out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land.

Psalm 91:11

For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

Isaiah 41:10

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

I find my Hobbies Fulfilling. Should I feel bad?

Exodus 20:3

Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

If we are putting anything in God’s place—even a good career, hobby, or avocation—then we are violating this first of the Ten Commandments, are guilty of idolatry, and should feel guilty.

Matthew 6:33

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Even if the pursuit is positive and life-giving, it should not be our top priority—seeking God’s Kingdom and living his way should be above all else.

Philippians 4:8

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

This is a good checklist for anything that occupies our time and attention. Is it true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy?

Ecclesiastes 9:10

Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

1 Corinthians 10:31

Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

If our pursuits are not sinful, and we have the right values, putting God first, we should do them well “for the glory of God.” Then we can rejoice that God has provided these opportunities to give us feelings of fulfillment and satisfaction.

Difference Between Hypocrisy and Sincerity

Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying, [2] Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. [3] But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? [4] For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. [5] But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; [6] And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. [7] Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, [8] This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. [9] But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

Jesus confronted those who wanted to appear sincere in keeping the law while twisting it to their own purposes. Superficially, they appeared obedient but under the surface they were committed to disobedience.

1 Corinthians 3:13-15

Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. [14] If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. [15] If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

1 Corinthians 10:12-13

Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. [13] There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Hypocrites can sound like and look like sincere people, but under the heat of life or in the light of God’s judgment, their true nature will be revealed.

Acts 2:46

And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,

Romans 12:9

Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.

2 Corinthians 6:6

By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned,

1 Timothy 1:5

Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:

Hebrews 10:22

Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

Genuine sincerity is humble and doesn’t point to itself, but to that which is truly important. A sincere faith highlights the God in whom our faith rests.

In what ways can Ridicule help me?

Acts 5:41

And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.

2 Corinthians 12:10
Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

Hebrews 10:32-34
But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions; [33] Partly, whilst ye were made a gazingstock both by reproaches and afflictions; and partly, whilst ye became companions of them that were so used. [34] For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance.

Ridicule can sharpen our perspective and solidify our priorities, producing faithfulness, contentment, and even joy. When we are put down, God will lift us up.

Does God Take from Me?

1 Peter 2:24

Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

Isaiah 53:4-5

Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. [5] But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

1 John 2:2

And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

1 John 4:10

Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

John 3:16

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Jesus took the punishment for our sins so we could live eternally with him.

Ezekiel 11:19

And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh:

Psalm 51:10

Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

Matthew 6:19-21

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: [20] But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: [21] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Matthew 13:44-46

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. [45] Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: [46] Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

Matthew 16:25-27

For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. [26] For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? [27] For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

James 1:17

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

2 Corinthians 9:15

Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.

God only takes from us in order to give us something greater. He wants us to enjoy eternity in all its fullness, so he teaches us to grow and value what lasts—godly character and loving relationships. Often, earthly possessions and desires become distractions that draw us away from these eternal treasures. God doesn’t want us to enter eternity empty-handed (1 Corinthians 3:12-15). So, sometimes, he takes our temporary earthly treasures to remind us to invest in what’s eternal.

Genesis 3:4-5

And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: [5] For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

Exodus 16:3

And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.

Psalm 119:14

I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches.

Malachi 3:10

Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

John 10:10

The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

Satan wants us to distrust God and believe he is withholding good things from us. If we distrust God’s love, we can be more easily persuaded to disobey his commands. But God isn’t trying to steal or hinder our enjoyment of life—in fact, he is trying to lead us to the most fulfilling life of all.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14

But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. [14] For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

John 11:21-26

Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. [22] But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee. [23] Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. [24] Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. [25] Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: [26] And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

John 11:32-37

Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. [33] When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, [34] And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see. [35] Jesus wept. [36] Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! [37] And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?

Matthew 5:4

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Revelation 21:4

And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

In time, each of us experiences the loss of a loved one. Jesus knows our pain—he experienced the loss of a friend himself. Even though he knew Lazarus would live eternally after death, and even though he knew he was going to raise Lazarus from the dead, he cried for his friend and for the sadness of Mary and Martha. When we go through the pain of having a loved one taken from us, we can take comfort that our God mourns with us until the day when he will make everything new. On that day, death will be no more and he will wipe our tears from our eyes.

How can I keep from being deceived by false teaching?

John 10:3-5

To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. [4] And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. [5] And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.

In these verses, Jesus is saying that when we really know someone, we can instantly recognize his or her voice. We can pick it out in a crowd because it is unique and distinct. In the same way, as we spend time studying the teachings of Jesus and getting to know him better in prayer, we will get to know his voice. When a person is preaching or teaching, we will be able to recognize if what he or she is saying is consistent with what Jesus would say. Knowing Jesus’ voice will protect us from deception.

1 Timothy 4:1-13

Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; [2] Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; [3] Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. [4] For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: [5] For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. [6] If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained. [7] But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. [8] For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. [9] This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation. [10] For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe. [11] These things command and teach. [12] Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. [13] Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

The only way for believers to stand their ground is to be spiritually fit. We should consistently expose ourselves to solid teaching instead of leaving our spiritual formation to chance.

James 3:1

My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.

We should carefully evaluate our spiritual teachers, checking to see if they are people of high moral character. They should consistently point us to Jesus and not to themselves. They should be humble and teach truth consistent with what is in the Bible.

Colossians 2:8

Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

1 Timothy 6:3

If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;

1 John 4:1

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

We can to recognize the devil and his lies by knowing God and his truth. Being familiar with the lies Satan often uses will also prepare us to counter them. Satan has practiced his lies over millennia—but

What's the difference between healthy confidence and unhealthy pride?

Job 19:25

For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:

1 John 3:2

Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

Healthy confidence is a realization and an assurance that God loves you, that he has given you talents and gifts and the ability to use them for him, that he has offered you salvation and eternal life in heaven. Knowing this gives you complete certainty that your life can have meaning now and forever.

2 Chronicles 26:16

But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction: for he transgressed against the LORD his God, and went into the temple of the LORD to burn incense upon the altar of incense.

Pride is the ingredient that causes our confidence to become arrogant and cocky. When we think we can do it ourselves and then we stop seeking God’s help—these are the warning signs that confidence has has turned to arrogance.

Does it really make a difference if I live in a consistent life or not?

Does it really make a difference if I live a consistent life or not?

Deuteronomy 8:1

All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers.

1 Thessalonians 4:12

That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.

Titus 2:7

In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,

People may not accept your faith, but if your lifestyle is consistently kind and helpful, more often than not they are compelled to trust and admire you. In addition, your life will benefit from the wisdom of God’s commands.

How does God respond to my grieving?

How does God respond to my grieving?

Psalm 10:17

LORD, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear:

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Psalm 119:76

Let, I pray thee, thy merciful kindness be for my comfort, according to thy word unto thy servant.

Psalm 147:3

He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.

Isaiah 51:12

I, even I, am he that comforteth you: who art thou, that thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass;

Lamentations 3:32

But though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies.

Matthew 5:4

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Over and over, the Bible emphasizes God’s special compassion for those who grieve. He comforts the brokenhearted by his presence, his listening, his love, his healing, his encouragement, and his blessings.

Isaiah 53:4

Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

Romans 6:6

Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

Hebrews 2:14

Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

God does not merely offer us sympathy from a distance. He doesn’t sit idly by while sin and death cause incredible grief and pain on earth. Instead, he came down among us and experienced the same griefs we do—the loss of loved ones, rejection and abandonment by close friends, public humiliation, and worse. And through his suffering, he bought us freedom from death, freedom from sin, and eternal life with himself.

2 Peter 3:9

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Sometimes it feels as though Jesus is waiting too long to return, but even that is meant to spare us grief. God wants to offer every tribe, people, and nation a chance to know him and receive him—his delay is not out of inaction, but out of patience and love.

Romans 12:15

Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.

1 Corinthians 12:27

Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; [4] Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

2 Corinthians 7:6

Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus;

God works through the church, his hands and feet here on earth, to comfort us in our grieving.

Why Should I Share?

Matthew 7:12

Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

1 Corinthians 1:4

I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ;

Ephesians 4:16

From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

We are to share with others because God shares so generously with us. Sharing is an expression of love. We need to share because God has given us special gifts, and by sharing them with others, we pass them on and bless others.

John 6:9

There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?

Our sharing benefits others far more than we may realize. The boy in this story shared his lunch with Jesus, who multiplied it to feed thousands of people. This allowed them to experience a great miracle firsthand, and allowed them to spend more time listening to Jesus. Because of this amazing experience, many surely went home with a newfound faith in Jesus.

How can remembering God's faithfulness help me in my spiritual walk?

How can remembering God’s faithfulness help me in my spiritual walk?

Nehemiah 4:14

And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.

We need to remember that God is the one who helps us fight and win the battles of life. He is working through us to accomplish his purposes. He will defeat sin’s grip on our lives and help us confidently fight life’s battles without fear.

Romans 8:38-39

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, [39] Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

1 John 4:9-10

In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. [10] Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Remembering God’s great and constant love for us will help us when we feel alone and beleaguered.

Psalm 147:11

The LORD taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy.

Jeremiah 17:7

Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.

Jonah 2:7

When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.

Romans 15:13

Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

Remembering God as the source of our hope will encourage and motivate us when we are struggling and feel like giving up.

Deuteronomy 8:11, 14

Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day: [14] Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;

Remembering God’s goodness and provision when we have plenty will help us be grateful and patient when times are hard.

Deuteronomy 6:6-9

And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: [7] And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. [8] And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. [9] And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

Moses reminded the people of Israel to take every opportunity to remember God’s Word and to tell family and friends of God’s past help and blessings. If we do this each day, we will strengthen our love for and commitment to God, which will motivate us to be even more faithful.

Remembering that God is with us all

Why is Encouraging those I lead necessary?

1 Thessalonians 5:14

Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.

Leaders can best motivate by encouragement, not embarrassment.

Deuteronomy 3:28

But charge Joshua, and encourage him, and strengthen him: for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which thou shalt see.

Leaders know that those who are struggling need the strength that comes from compassion and encouragement.

Hebrews 10:24

And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:

Encouragement usually inspires people not only to do their best but also to be gracious, loving, and supporting to others.

2 Corinthians 13:11

Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.

Encouragement helps to create a relational environment where God’s Spirit can more easily work among and through us.

Does God ever stop pursuing us?

Psalm 89:2

"For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: thy faithfulness shalt thou establish in the very heavens."

Amos 5:4-6

"For thus saith the LORD unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live: [5] But seek not Beth–el, nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not to Beer–sheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Beth–el shall come to nought. [6] Seek the LORD, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Beth–el."

Zechariah 1:3

"Therefore say thou unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye unto me, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the LORD of hosts."

Romans 8:39

"Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

2 Peter 3:9

"The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance."

God pursues us much farther and longer than any of us deserve. God’s love relentlessly calls everyone to turn from sin and into an eternal relationship with him. While his desire is that none would perish, he allows us the freedom to return his love or to reject him and spend eternity apart from him and his love. The choice is ours.

Matthew 12:31-36

"Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. [32] And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. [33] Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit. [34] O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. [35] A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. [36] But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment."

Mark 3:28-29

"Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme: [29] But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:"

Hebrews 9:27-28

"And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: [28] So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation."

Death marks the stopping point of God’s pursuit of us by his Spirit. The blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is ultimately expressed when we refuse to admit our sinful condition before God and accept his remedy. The possibility of repentance is always there until the point of death, but then comes judgment and no other opportunities.

What if I don’t want anyone to know certain things about me?

Jeremiah 23:24

"Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the Lord. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the Lord."

What you withhold now is likely to be exposed at a later time. So why not seek advice now? Besides, God knows all the secrets in our hearts. If you’re going to take accountability seriously, you cannot hide anything from the one who you are accountable to.

How might I betray God?

Jeremiah 3:20

"Surely as a wife treacherously departeth from her husband, so have ye dealt treacherously with me, O house of Israel, saith the LORD."

The opposite of betrayal is loyalty. Anyone who has become a Christian has pledged loyalty to God—Father, Son (Jesus Christ), and Holy Spirit. We are disloyal to God when we allow something else to become more important than him, or when we look to something or someone else to help us without even acknowledging God or asking for his help first.

Romans 7:21-23

"I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. [22] For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: [23] But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members."

Despite all his theological training and his success in carrying the gospel all over the world, the apostle Paul never lost sight of his own flawed humanity. He was still capable of sin. Sin always betrays God. We see in Paul’s description of his own sin that our sinful human nature causes us to betray God even when we don’t want to. Our sin also betrays us, lying to us that we can get away with it or that it will actually make our life better. As a human race, we are infected with unfaithfulness. Unless we acknowledge that we are prone to wander, we will never honestly repent or ask God to help us do better.

Nehemiah 9:26

"Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their backs, and slew thy prophets which testified against them to turn them to thee, and they wrought great provocations."

Like the people of Jerusalem in Nehemiah 9, we can benefit from reflecting on the past from time to time. Honesty about the past can be painful; our former disobedience to God was a betrayal of him. And when we betray others who are representing God in our lives (as the Israelites did who turned on and killed God’s prophets), this action is also a betrayal of God (see Acts 9:4).

Numbers 5:6

"Speak unto the children of Israel, When a man or woman shall commit any sin that men commit, to do a trespass against the LORD, and that person be guilty;"

Harming others is the exact opposite of keeping the second part of the great commandment: to love our neighbors as ourselves. Doing wrong to another person is also an act of betrayal to God, because we are called to do what is right toward all people created in God’s image—and that’s everyone!

2 Timothy 2:11-13

"It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him: [12] If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us: [13] If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself."

This passage seems to indicate that there are two levels of betrayal: denial and unfaithfulness. The first describes a settled rejection of God; the second, a momentary and regrettable failure. The first seals our fate, but the second may be reversed by God’s own faithfulness. God knows how prone we are to fail in keeping our promises, yet still he is utterly dependable.

How can God bring success from our failure?

Proverbs 28:13

"He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy."

Mark 14:72

"And the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept."

2 Corinthians 13:5-7

"Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? [6] But I trust that ye shall know that we are not reprobates. [7] Now I pray to God that ye do no evil; not that we should appear approved, but that ye should do that which is honest, though we be as reprobates."

Failure presents an opportunity for us to examine ourselves and find our flaws. If we are wise, we will ask God to use us despite our flaws. Foolish people will blame others, even God, for their flaws and then try to cover them up.

1 Kings 8:33-34

"When thy people Israel be smitten down before the enemy, because they have sinned against thee, and shall turn again to thee, and confess thy name, and pray, and make supplication unto thee in this house: [34] Then hear thou in heaven, and forgive the sin of thy people Israel, and bring them again unto the land which thou gavest unto their fathers."

Failure presents us with an opportunity for repentance, forgiveness, and restored fellowship with God. Those who pretend to be perfect think they don’t need God. Those who recognize their failings know they do. Failure inspires us to strengthen our reliance on God.

Romans 5:20

"Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:"

Failure presents an opportunity for us to experience and appreciate God’s grace. When we fail desperately, we realize how desperately we need God’s help.

Psalm 40:11-15

"Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O LORD: let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me. [12] For innumerable evils have compassed me about: mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart faileth me. [13] Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me: O LORD, make haste to help me. [14] Let them be ashamed and confounded together that seek after my soul to destroy it; let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evil. [15] Let them be desolate for a reward of their shame that say unto me, Aha, aha."

Failure presents us with an opportunity to trust God more fully.

Mark 9:28-29

"And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out? [29] And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting."

Failure presents us with an opportunity to pray. When we have fallen in some way, the only way to look is up.

Isaiah 42:18-20, 23

"Hear, ye deaf; and look, ye blind, that ye may see. [19] Who is blind, but my servant? or deaf, as my messenger that I sent? who is blind as he that is perfect, and blind as the LORD'S servant? [20] Seeing many things, but thou observest not; opening the ears, but he heareth not. [23] Who among you will give ear to this? who will hearken and hear for the time to come?"

Jeremiah 44:9

"Have ye forgotten the wickedness of your fathers, and the wickedness of the kings of Judah, and the wickedness of their wives, and your own wickedness, and the wickedness of your wives, which they have committed in the land of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem?"

Failure presents us with an opportunity to learn from our mistakes of others.

What is the benefit of living by the values God considers important?

Joshua 1:6-9

"Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them. [7] Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest. [8] This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. [9] Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest."

God’s values are recorded in his Word. Knowing them, continually meditating on them, discussing them with others, and putting them into practice will lead to a life of success in God’s eyes.

Proverbs 3:5-6

"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. [6] In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."

God’s will is the expression of his values. Trusting him and seeking to do what he values provides us with reliable guidance for living.

Matthew 6:19-21

"Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: [20] But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: [21] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."

Matthew 6:31-33

"Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? [32] (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. [33] But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."

Living in this world will always involve responding to the demands of the world’s values, what the world treasures. But a constant awareness of God’s active presence and continuous efforts to live by his values will ensure that our lives will be properly ordered.

2 Kings 12:15

"Moreover they reckoned not with the men, into whose hand they delivered the money to be bestowed on workmen: for they dealt faithfully."

1 Samuel 12:4

"And they said, Thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither hast thou taken ought of any man's hand."

Living by the values of Scripture will earn us a good reputation, make us trustworthy, and help us model a life that pleases God.

When I am negotiating a compromise, how do I know if I’m about to make a bad agreement?

1 Samuel 8:4-7

"Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah, [5] And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations. [6] But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD. [7] And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them."

The people were willing to move further away from God and lose personal freedoms to be similar to other nations and win military might. Compromise is a bad deal when you trade eternal loyalties for temporary ones.

Daniel 1:8

"But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself."

Daniel was able to negotiate an agreement to avoid compromising his convictions—both the king and Daniel got what they wanted. Whenever you negotiate, never give up your Christian convictions.

2 Kings 15:3-4

"And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father Amaziah had done; [4] Save that the high places were not removed: the people sacrificed and burnt incense still on the high places."

Bad compromise doesn’t always involve a trade; sometimes it is failing to take the action that you and God know is right. Doing nothing when you know God wants you to do something is a compromise of your convictions and commitments.

Does God expect me to be merciful?

Micah 6:8

"He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?"

Matthew 12:7

"But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless."

Matthew 18:33

"Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?"

Jude 1:21-23

"Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. [22] And of some have compassion, making a difference: [23] And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh."

Yes, God expects us to show mercy. We must show mercy to others, just as God shows mercy to us.

What is joy?

Psalm 5:11

"But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee."

Psalm 16:11

"Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore."

Psalm 33:12

"Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance."

Psalm 68:3

"But let the righteous be glad; let them rejoice before God: yea, let them exceedingly rejoice."

Psalm 144:15

"Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the LORD."

Proverbs 16:20

"He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy is he."

Romans 5:1-2

"Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: [2] By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God."

Romans 5:11

"And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement."

Galatians 5:22-23

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, [23] Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law."

Joy is the celebration of walking with God. It is an inner happiness that lasts despite the circumstances around us because it is based on a relationship with Jesus Christ. We have peace with God, and we realize how privileged we are to know Jesus as Savior, to have our sins forgiven, to be friends with God Almighty, and to be certain we will live forever with him. Joy is one of the important qualities we experience when we allow the Holy Spirit to control our lives.

Isaiah 51:11

"Therefore the redeemed of the LORD shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away."

2 Corinthians 8:2

"How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality."

1 Peter 1:8

"Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:"

1 John 1:4

"And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full."

Real joy is everlasting, full, abundant, glorious, and inexpressible.

What causes tragedy?

Genesis 6:5-8

"And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. [6] And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. [7] And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. [8] But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD."

Leviticus 10:1-2

"And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not. [2] And there went out fire from the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD."

Deuteronomy 11:28

"And a curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which ye have not known."

Joshua 23:15

"Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you."

1 Samuel 22:18, 22

"And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and slew on that day fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen ephod. [22] And David said unto Abiathar, I knew it that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul: I have occasioned the death of all the persons of thy father's house."

2 Kings 17:7

"For so it was, that the children of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God, which had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods,"

Psalm 34:21

"Evil shall slay the wicked: and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate."

Jeremiah 11:9-11

"And the LORD said unto me, A conspiracy is found among the men of Judah, and among the inhabitants of Jerusalem. [10] They are turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers, which refused to hear my words; and they went after other gods to serve them: the house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken my covenant which I made with their fathers. [11] Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto them."

Jeremiah 18:11

"Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good."

Jeremiah 25:7, 29

"Yet ye have not hearkened unto me, saith the LORD; that ye might provoke me to anger with the works of your hands to your own hurt. [29] For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by my name, and should ye be utterly unpunished? Ye shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the LORD of hosts."

Jeremiah 26:3, 13

"If so be they will hearken, and turn every man from his evil way, that I may repent me of the evil, which I purpose to do unto them because of the evil of their doings. [13] Therefore now amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of the LORD your God; and the LORD will repent him of the evil that he hath pronounced against you."

Jeremiah 32:21, 23

"And hast brought forth thy people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs, and with wonders, and with a strong hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with great terror; [23] And they came in, and possessed it; but they obeyed not thy voice, neither walked in thy law; they have done nothing of all that thou commandedst them to do: therefore thou hast caused all this evil to come upon them:"

Jeremiah 44:23

"Because ye have burned incense, and because ye have sinned against the LORD, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD, nor walked in his law, nor in his statutes, nor in his testimonies; therefore this evil is happened unto you, as at this day."

Daniel 9:14

"Therefore hath the LORD watched upon the evil, and brought it upon us: for the LORD our God is righteous in all his works which he doeth: for we obeyed not his voice."

Tragedy sometimes occurs because of disobedience and sin. It may be a natural consequence of the wickedness of sinful actions or a response from God to the rebelliousness of sin itself. At times, one person’s sin has consequences for a broader community.

Proverbs 1:25-30

"But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: [26] I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; [27] When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you. [28] Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: [29] For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: [30] They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof."

Tragedy is sometimes caused by ignoring God’s wisdom. The rules and laws he gives are not meant to squelch pleasure or fun, but to keep us out of trouble and bring us life and health.

2 Kings 13:1-3

"In the three and twentieth year of Joash the son of Ahaziah king of Judah Jehoahaz the son of Jehu began to reign over Israel in Samaria, and reigned seventeen years. [2] And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, and followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom. [3] And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hand of Hazael king of Syria, and into the hand of Ben–hadad the son of Hazael, all their days."

Jeremiah 10:21

"For the pastors are become brutish, and have not sought the LORD: therefore they shall not prosper, and all their flocks shall be scattered."

Micah 3:1-4

"And I said, Hear, I pray you, O heads of Jacob, and ye princes of the house of Israel; Is it not for you to know judgment? [2] Who hate the good, and love the evil; who pluck off their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones; [3] Who also eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them; and they break their bones, and chop them in pieces, as for the pot, and as flesh within the caldron. [4] Then shall they cry unto the LORD, but he will not hear them: he will even hide his face from them at that time, as they have behaved themselves ill in their doings."

Zephaniah 1:4-6

"I will also stretch out mine hand upon Judah, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, and the name of the Chemarims with the priests; [5] And them that worship the host of heaven upon the housetops; and them that worship and that swear by the LORD, and that swear by Malcham; [6] And them that are turned back from the LORD; and those that have not sought the LORD, nor enquired for him."

Tragedy is sometimes caused by the mistakes of ungodly leaders.

Ruth 1:21

"I went out full, and the LORD hath brought me home again empty: why then call ye me Naomi, seeing the LORD hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me?"

Job 1:9-12

"Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought? [10] Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. [11] But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face. [12] And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD."

Ecclesiastes 7:14

"In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him."

Isaiah 45:7

"I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things."

Luke 13:1-5

"There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. [2] And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things? [3] I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. [4] Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? [5] I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish."

John 9:1-3

"And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. [2] And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? [3] Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him."

Tragedy is sometimes allowed to test our faith and our response to adversity. While we may not always understand the reason for life’s tragic circumstances, we should not give up trusting God or his ability to bring good out of the situation. If we give up, we usually become bitter and hopeless because we see no value to life whatsoever.

Are there things that are proven to be untrustworthy?

Job 15:31

"Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence."

Relying on money or possessions for security is a shaky foundation that collapses into emptiness.

Job 8:13-19

"So are the paths of all that forget God; and the hypocrite's hope shall perish: [14] Whose hope shall be cut off, and whose trust shall be a spider's web. [15] He shall lean upon his house, but it shall not stand: he shall hold it fast, but it shall not endure. [16] He is green before the sun, and his branch shooteth forth in his garden. [17] His roots are wrapped about the heap, and seeth the place of stones. [18] If he destroy him from his place, then it shall deny him, saying, I have not seen thee. [19] Behold, this is the joy of his way, and out of the earth shall others grow."

Hoping in something other than God’s plan will cause your life to collapse at the end.

Psalm 44:6-7

"For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me. [7] But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us."

Isaiah 31:1

"Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD!"

Luke 11:22

"But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils."

Psalm 29:7

"The voice of the LORD divideth the flames of fire."

The voice of the Lord strikes with lightning bolts.

Trusting in human strength or weapons without God won’t bring ultimate victory.

Psalm 40:4

"Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies."

Trusting in proud, ungodly people will backfire.

Habakkuk 2:18

"What profiteth the graven image that the maker thereof hath graven it; the molten image, and a teacher of lies, that the maker of his work trusteth therein, to make dumb idols?"

What have you gained by worshiping all your man-made idols? How foolish to trust in something made by your own hands! What fools you are to believe such lies!

Isaiah 42:17

"They shall be turned back, they shall be greatly ashamed, that trust in graven images, that say to the molten images, Ye are our gods."

Jeremiah 13:25

"This is thy lot, the portion of thy measures from me, saith the LORD; because thou hast forgotten me, and trusted in falsehood."

Trusting in anything other than God is idolatry and meaningless.

Psalm 146:3

"Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help."

Isaiah 2:22

"Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of?"

Jeremiah 17:5

"Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD."

Isaiah 30:15-16

"For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not. [16] But ye said, No; for we will flee upon horses; therefore shall ye flee: and, We will ride upon the swift; therefore shall they that pursue you be swift."

Trusting in people alone, without God, will give you human advice but no divine guidance.

Proverbs 28:26

"He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered."

Proverbs 3:5

"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding."

Isaiah 22:8-11

"And he discovered the covering of Judah, and thou didst look in that day to the armour of the house of the forest. [9] Ye have seen also the breaches of the city of David, that they are many: and ye gathered together the waters of the lower pool. [10] And ye have numbered the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses have ye broken down to fortify the wall. [11] Ye made also a ditch between the two walls for the water of the old pool: but ye have not looked unto the maker thereof, neither had respect unto him that fashioned it long ago."

Judah’s defenses have been stripped away. You run to the armory for your weapons. You inspect the walls of Jerusalem to see what needs to be repaired. You store up water in the lower pool. You check the houses and tear some down to get stone to fix the walls. Between the city walls, you build a reservoir for water from the old pool. But all your feverish plans are to no avail because you never ask God for help. He is the one who planned this long ago.

Trusting in yourself is foolish because you only know so much

Ezekiel 16:15

"But thou didst trust in thine own beauty, and playedst the harlot because of thy renown, and pouredst out thy fornications on every one that passed by; his it was."

Trusting in fame or beauty is fleeting.

Jeremiah 7:14

"Therefore will I do unto this house, which is called by my name, wherein ye trust, and unto the place which I gave to you and to your fathers, as I have done to Shiloh."

We must be careful not to trust in buildings, even in God’s house.

John 8:33

"They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?"

Trusting in your heritage does not secure your future.

Romans 9:32

"Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;"

Why not? Because they were trying to get right with God by keeping the law and being good instead of by depending on faith. They stumbled over the great rock in their path.

Romans 2:17

"Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God,"

If you are a Jew, you are relying on God’s law for your special relationship with him. You boast that all is well between yourself and God.

Romans 3:19-20

"Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. [20] Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin."

Obviously, the law applies to those to whom it was given, for its purpose is to keep people from having excuses and to bring the entire world into judgment before God. For no one can ever be made right in God’s sight by doing what his law commands. For the more we know God’s law, the clearer it becomes that we aren’t obeying it.

Trusting in strict obedience to the law or rules of God without trusting in the God who made them is legalism, which cannot save you.

Ezekiel 33:13

"When I shall say to the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousnesses shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it."

When I tell righteous people that they will live, but then they sin, expecting their past righteousness to save them, then none of their good deeds will be remembered. I will destroy them for their sins.

We must be careful not to trust in past good deeds.

Luke 18:9

"And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:"

We must be careful not to trust in self-confidence.

Deuteronomy 28:52

"And he shall besiege thee in all thy gates, until thy high and fenced walls come down, wherein thou trustedst, throughout all thy land: and he shall besiege thee in all thy gates throughout all thy land, which the LORD thy God hath given thee."

They will lay siege to your cities until all the fortified walls in your land—the walls you trusted to protect you—are knocked down. They will attack all the towns in the land the Lord your God has given you.

Jeremiah 5:17

"And they shall eat up thine harvest, and thy bread, which thy sons and thy daughters should eat: they shall eat up thy flocks and thine herds: they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig trees: they shall impoverish thy fenced cities, wherein thou trustedst, with the sword."

They will eat your harvests and your children’s bread, your flocks of sheep and your herds of cattle. Yes, they will eat your grapes and figs. And they will destroy your fortified cities, which you think are so safe.

Fortifications and protection without God is not trustworthy.

Job 31:24

"If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;"

How do I deal with loss in my life?

John 11:35

"Jesus wept."

We should never deny our loss. Even if we know we will see someone again someday, separation is painful. The tears of Jesus at Lazarus’s death forever validate our tears of grief.

Genesis 50:1-13

"And Joseph fell upon his father's face, and wept upon him, and kissed him. [2] And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel. [3] And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those which are embalmed: and the Egyptians mourned for him threescore and ten days. [4] And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying, [5] My father made me swear, saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again. [6] And Pharaoh said, Go up, and bury thy father, according as he made thee swear. [7] And Joseph went up to bury his father: and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, [8] And all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and his father's house: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen. [9] And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen: and it was a very great company. [10] And they came to the threshingfloor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan, and there they mourned with a great and very sore lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father seven days. [11] And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians: wherefore the name of it was called Abel–mizraim, which is beyond Jordan. [12] And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them: [13] For his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a buryingplace of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre."

Grief is a process that should not be denied or hurried. The rituals of wakes, visitations, funerals, and memorial services all help us move through stages of grief. If a loss does not involve death (such as a friend moving away, a damaged relationship, or the loss of a good job) we still need to allow ourselves to grieve to bring healing to our hurt souls.

2 Samuel 11:1-3

"And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem. [2] And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. [3] And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bath–sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?"

For reasons not known, King David gave up the active leadership of his troops. The loss may have created a vacuum in his life that he sought to fill with an immoral relationship with Bathsheba. As we grieve our losses, we must be careful not to “medicate” our pain in ways that will only create more pain.

Job 1:20-22

"Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped, [21] And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD. [22] In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly."

Losses always bring pain. Recognizing and expressing that pain is not wrong or sinful. It is a healthy expression of how God created us.

Romans 12:15

"Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep."

2 Corinthians 1:4

"Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God."

Mourning is a deeply personal experience. Sometimes, we withdraw from others during our times of mourning. While some withdrawal may be needed to leave time for healing, we should never isolate ourselves from others’ love and support. Friends who mourn with us—especially those who have experienced a similar loss—are a great blessing to those who mourn.

Lamentations 3:18-25

"And I said, My strength and my hope is perished from the LORD: [19] Remembering mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall. [20] My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me. [21] This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. [22] It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. [23] They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. [24] The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him. [25] The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him."

Thessalonians 4:13-14, 18

"13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words."

Those who know God grieve with the assurance of his love and have hope in his promises. Those who don’t know God grieve alone and without hope.

Hebrews 10:34

"For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance."

It is important to allow ourselves to grieve, but there is a time for grieving to end. By serving God and others with all the energy and enthusiasm we can muster, we will begin to find healing. As Christians, we have the comfort of knowing that one day we will be with God in heaven where all grief will be gone forever.

How can I minister to the sick?

James 5:14-15

Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: [15] And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

You can pray for those who are sick. Some will be healed and some will be strengthened spiritually even though they are not healed.

Mark 2:3-5

"And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four. [4] And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay. [5] When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee."

John 5:7

"The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me."

Often, there are practical ways to help those who are sick get the help and healing they need.

Galatians 4:13-14

"Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first. [14] And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus."

Luke 10:33-34, 36-37

"But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, [34] And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. [36] Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? [37] And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise."

Matthew 25:36

"Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me."

You can meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the sick.

What happens when there is no accountability?

Judges 17:6

"In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes."

Genesis 16:6

"But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face."

Isaiah 47:8

"Therefore hear now this, thou that art given to pleasures, that dwellest carelessly, that sayest in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children:"

Left unaccountable, we will always lean toward sin, the consequences of which eventually draw us away from God and cause suffering for us and others.

1 Samuel 13:11-13

"And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash; [12] Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering. [13] And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever."

Acts 18:24-26

"And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus. [25] This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John. [26] And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly."

Even those trying to do good need accountability. Sometimes our own good intentions can be sabotaged by wrong information or even by our enthusiasm.

Why do I pretend to be someone or something that I’m not?

Matthew 23:27-28

"Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. [28] Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity."

Mark 12:38-40

"And he said unto them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the marketplaces, [39] And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts: [40] Which devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation."

Pride— everyone wants to look honorable and important in the eyes of their peers. But looking honorable and having an honorable heart are two different things. The temporary effects of pretending may accomplish our purpose, but we will regret the long-term results.

2 Corinthians 4:1-7

"Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not; [2] But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God. [3] But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: [4] In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. [5] For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. [6] For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. [7] But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us."

1 Thessalonians 2:5

"For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness; God is witness:"

Flattery—We may use flattery to pretend we like someone in order to get something from them. Transparency may require a lot of humility, but in the end, the impression we make on others will be genuine. God works through humble (or fragile) vessels.

Genesis 27:5-19, 35-36

And Rebekah heard when Isaac spake to Esau his son. And Esau went to the field to hunt for venison, and to bring it. [6] And Rebekah spake unto Jacob her son, saying, Behold, I heard thy father speak unto Esau thy brother, saying, [7] Bring me venison, and make me savoury meat, that I may eat, and bless thee before the LORD before my death. [8] Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to that which I command thee. [9] Go now to the flock, and fetch me from thence two good kids of the goats; and I will make them savoury meat for thy father, such as he loveth: [10] And thou shalt bring it to thy father, that he may eat, and that he may bless thee before his death. [11] And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man: [12] My father peradventure will feel me, and I shall seem to him as a deceiver; and I shall bring a curse upon me, and not a blessing. [13] And his mother said unto him, Upon me be thy curse, my son: only obey my voice, and go fetch me them. [14] And he went, and fetched, and brought them to his mother: and his mother made savoury meat, such as his father loved. [15] And Rebekah took goodly raiment of her eldest son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them upon Jacob her younger son: [16] And she put the skins of the kids of the goats upon his hands, and upon the smooth of his neck: [17] And she gave the savoury meat and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob. [18] And he came unto his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I; who art thou, my son? [19] And Jacob said unto his father, I am Esau thy firstborn; I have done according as thou badest me: arise, I pray thee, sit and eat of my venison, that thy soul may bless me. [35] And he said, Thy brother came with subtilty, and hath taken away thy blessing. [36] And he said, Is not he rightly named Jacob? for he hath supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright; and, behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. And he said, Hast thou not reserved a blessing for me?"

Genesis 29:16-25

"And Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. [17] Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and well favoured. [18] And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter. [19] And Laban said, It is better that I give her to thee, than that I should give her to another man: abide with me. [20] And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her. [21] And Jacob said unto Laban, Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in unto her. [22] And Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast. [23] And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in unto her. [24] And Laban gave unto his daughter Leah Zilpah his maid for an handmaid. [25] And it came to pass, that in the morning, behold, it was Leah: and he said to Laban, What is this thou hast done unto me? did not I serve with thee for Rachel? wherefore then hast thou beguiled me?"

Joshua 9:3-22

"And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai, [4] They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up; [5] And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy. [6] And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us. [7] And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you? [8] And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye? [9] And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt, [10] And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth. [11] Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us. [12] This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy: [13] And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey. [14] And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD. [15] And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them. [16] And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them. [17] And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath–jearim. [18] And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes. [19] But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them. [20] This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them. [21] And the princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them. [22] And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?"

1 Samuel 28:7-12

"Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and enquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor. [8] And Saul disguised himself, and put on other raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto thee. [9] And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life, to cause me to die? [10] And Saul sware to her by the LORD, saying, As the LORD liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing. [11] Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel. [12] And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? for thou art Saul."

1 Kings 14:1-6

"At that time Abijah the son of Jeroboam fell sick. [2] And Jeroboam said to his wife, Arise, I pray thee, and disguise thyself, that thou be not known to be the wife of Jeroboam; and get thee to Shiloh: behold, there is Ahijah the prophet, which told me that I should be king over this people. [3] And take with thee ten loaves, and cracknels, and a cruse of honey, and go to him: he shall tell thee what shall become of the child. [4] And Jeroboam's wife did so, and arose, and went to Shiloh, and came to the house of Ahijah. But Ahijah could not see; for his eyes were set by reason of his age. [5] And the LORD said unto Ahijah, Behold, the wife of Jeroboam cometh to ask a thing of thee for her son; for he is sick: thus and thus shalt thou say unto her: for it shall be, when she cometh in, that she shall feign herself to be another woman. [6] And it was so, when Ahijah heard the sound of her feet, as she came in at the door, that he said, Come in, thou wife of Jeroboam; why feignest thou thyself to be another? for I am sent to thee with heavy tidings."

Selfishness— It is not uncommon for us to act selfishly to get what we want, while disguising our true motives. The Bible includes many accounts, beginning with the serpent’s deception of Adam and Eve (Genesis 3), of someone tricking someone else to accomplish a selfishly dishonest purpose. Our self-centered actions never have the well being of other people in mind, but are all about getting what we desire.

What can we learn about God from victory and defeat?

Deuteronomy 20:4

"For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you."

Psalm 3:8

"Salvation belongeth unto the LORD: thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah."

Psalm 44:3-4

"For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them. [4] Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Jacob."

Psalm 48:10

"According to thy name, O God, so is thy praise unto the ends of the earth: thy right hand is full of righteousness."

Proverbs 21:31

The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the LORD.

Winning all the time does not train us to overcome. We often learn to trust God by watching him act on our behalf when defeat seems imminent and sure. Ultimate victory belongs to those who trust God to help them.

2 Chronicles 7:14-15

"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. [15] Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attent unto the prayer that is made in this place."

In order for us to become closer to God, it may be necessary for us to lose a few battles. God can use all things, even our failures, to show us more of who he is.

Psalm 119:67, 71

"Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word. [71] It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.

Sometimes we need to suffer under God’s discipline in order for God to shape us into the people he wants us to be."

2 Corinthians 12:7-10

"And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. [8] For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. [9] And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. [10] Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong."

In our areas of weakness, God’s strength is most evident. Allowing God to work through our weaknesses forces us to acknowledge that the victory is his.

2 Corinthians 1:8-10

For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life: [9] But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead: [10] Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;

Our times of defeat teach us to rely on God. When all is well, we may think we don’t need God. When experience defeat, we discover first hand how much we need God.

I’m lonely. What can I do?

Psalm 23:4

"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me."

Psalm 139:17

"How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!"

Isaiah 54:10

"For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee."

Recognize that you are not unlovable or deficient just because you are lonely. You have value because God made you, loves you, and promises never to leave you.

Exodus 5:21-22

"And they said unto them, The LORD look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savour to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us. [22] And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Lord, wherefore hast thou so evil entreated this people? why is it that thou hast sent me?"

1 Kings 19:4

"But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers."

Don’t give up on God when you are lonely. It will cause you to feel sorry for yourself, become discouraged, and fall prey to temptation.

1 Kings 19:10

"And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away."

Matthew 11:2-3

"Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, [3] And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?"

1 Peter 4:19

"Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator."

Sometimes we feel alone in our stand for Christ. We can take comfort in knowing that there are others who are equally committed and that God rewards our bold commitment.

Romans 12:4-5

"For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: [5] So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another."

Be around other people. Get involved in a local church. Volunteer in local community events.

Isaiah 41:10

"Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."

John 14:1

"Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me."

What is my role in the body of Christ?

Romans 12:4-8

"For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: [5] So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. [6] Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; [7] Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; [8] Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness."

1 Corinthians 3:5-11

"Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? [6] I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. [7] So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. [8] Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. [9] For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building. [10] According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. [11] For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ."

Ephesians 4:16

"From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love."

God gifts his people and assigns roles for them in his church. We should determine our spiritual gifts and use them with enthusiasm to strengthen our communities of faith.

Acts 2:17-18

"And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: [18] And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:"

Acts 6:2-5

"Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. [3] Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. [4] But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. [5] And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch:"

Acts 21:9-10

"And the same man had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy. [10] And as we tarried there many days, there came down from Judaea a certain prophet, named Agabus."

Romans 16:1

"I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea:"

Romans 16:6, 12

"Greet Mary, who bestowed much labour on us. [12] Salute Tryphena and Tryphosa, who labour in the Lord. Salute the beloved Persis, which laboured much in the Lord."

Philippians 4:2-3

"I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord. [3] And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life."

1 Timothy 3:2-7

"A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; [3] Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; [4] One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; [5] (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) [6] Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. [7] Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil."

1 Timothy 3:8-13

"Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; [9] Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. [10] And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. [11] Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. [12] Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. [13] For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus."

These are a few of the roles God assigns to people: preachers, teachers, administrators, prophets, elders, deacons, singers, and distributors of food and other practical help.

Promises from God

Ezekiel 11:19

"And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh:"

Romans 3:22

"Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:"

Ezekiel 36:26

"A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh."

Matthew 10:38

"And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me."

Matthew 11:29

"Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls."

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14

"But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. [14] For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him."

Matthew 5:4

"Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted."

1 John 2:2

"And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world."

1 John 4:10

"Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins."

“It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”  — C.S. Lewis TALENTS (see ABILITIES, EXCELLENCE)

How can others see God’s presence in me?

Genesis 41:38

"And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is?"

Daniel 4:8

"But at the last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods: and before him I told the dream, saying,"

Daniel 4:18

"This dream I king Nebuchadnezzar have seen. Now thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation thereof, forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation: but thou art able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee."

Daniel 5:11-14

"There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I say, thy father, made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers; [12] Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing of hard sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the interpretation. [13] Then was Daniel brought in before the king. And the king spake and said unto Daniel, Art thou that Daniel, which art of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Jewry? [14] I have even heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee."

Acts 9:19-27

"And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus. [20] And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God. [21] But all that heard him were amazed, and said; Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and came hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests? [22] But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ. [23] And after that many days were fulfilled, the Jews took counsel to kill him: [24] But their laying await was known of Saul. And they watched the gates day and night to kill him. [25] Then the disciples took him by night, and let him down by the wall in a basket. [26] And when Saul was come to Jerusalem, he assayed to join himself to the disciples: but they were all afraid of him, and believed not that he was a disciple. [27] But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus."

Joseph used the abilities God gave him and then gave God the credit. Pharaoh immediately recognized Joseph as “a man so obviously filled with the spirit of God.” Daniel lived out the presence of God in a foreign land. After Paul was converted, he immediately displayed the unexpected presence of God’s Spirit in his life and preaching. Although our opportunities may not be as challenging as interpreting dreams for a king, others can see God in us as we use the abilities he has given us in our everyday circumstances. We have positive spiritual influence on others simply by serving them in a way that honors God. When we allow God to work in us, others will then see God's presence in us.

What’s wrong with just a little sin if it could help me accomplish something bigger?

Exodus 34:12

"Take heed to thyself, lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land whither thou goest, lest it be for a snare in the midst of thee:"

2 John 1:9

"Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son."

Revelation 2:14

"But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication."

Compromise can dull our sensitivity to sin. A little sin is just as bad as a lot of sin. Sin is sin, and sin is wrong.

Judges 16:1

"Then went Samson to Gaza, and saw there an harlot, and went in unto her."

Trading morals, national leadership, and allegiance to one’s people for a night of pleasure is a bad compromise. It is giving up too much to get too little. Trading the best of life for a moment of pleasure is a foolish choice.

People say I can be too competitive at times. How can I learn to lighten up?

Matthew 6:19-21

"Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: [20] But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: [21] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."

There’s nothing wrong with a competitive nature. Just make sure you are not competing for the wrong things with the wrong motives. Check your competitive nature before you no longer care if you hurt someone in the process.

Colossians 3:23

"And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;"

Remember that you are called to work hard to do your best, not to beat others. Your best honors the God who created you. If beating others is your only goal, it just honors yourself.

1 Corinthians 15:57-58

"But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. [58] Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord."

The ultimate and greatest victory you can achieve in life is winning eternal life through faith in Jesus. Keep your eye on that goal, and then you will be able to handle lesser victories or defeats with more grace.

When do we grieve?

Ruth 1:9

"The LORD grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept."

Nehemiah 2:2-3

"Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid, [3] And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?"

We grieve when we see loved ones hurt or in great need.

John 11:35

"Jesus wept."

Acts 9:39

"Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them."

We grieve over the death of a loved one.

James 4:9

"Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness."

2 Corinthians 7:10

"For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death."

We should genuinely grieve for our sins and beg God to remove them. Until Christ has cleansed us of those sins, we nurture them, and they continue to lurk within us. Confession and forgiveness will cleanse sin and wipe away the tears that unconfessed sin brought.

Luke 13:34

"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings , and ye would not!"

We should grieve over lost souls.

What’s the goal of fairness?

Psalm 103:6

"The LORD executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed."

Isaiah 33:15-16

"He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil; [16] He shall dwell on high: his place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks: bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure."

Amos 5:21, 24

"I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies. [24] But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream."

Micah 6:8

"He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?"

Matthew 7:12

"Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets."

Being fair is treating all people with the same standard of love and justice. We make sure that goodness prevails for others, regardless of the advantages or disadvantages to us personally. Fairness is simply acting with no other motive than to do what is right.

Proverbs 24:29

"Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me: I will render to the man according to his work."

Romans 12:19

"Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord."

Revenge does not create fairness. Fairness always seeks to do what is right; it does not retaliate just for the sake of getting even. We don’t have the authority to punish others for sin, , but we can be confident that justice is in God's hands.

Promises From God

Proverbs 12:19

"The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment."

1 Peter 3:10

For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:

2 Timothy 3:16

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Promises From God

Hebrews 13:2

"Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares."

Matthew 25:35-36

"For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: [36] Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me."

How do I know when something important is actually finished?

Luke 14:28-30

"For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? [29] Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, [30] Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish."

In talking to the crowd about the cost of being his disciple, Jesus used this illustration about a builder running out of money. We should work hard to finish all the work assigned to us, but we should always count the cost before undertaking any project, so we won’t fail to complete the work and look foolish.

Philippians 1:6

"Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:"

The most important tasks will never be finished before we die because they are lifetime callings. And with some, we will not know the result during this life for a variety of factors. But God knows, so we should trust him and the good work he is doing in us and in the world.

Proverbs 22:6

"Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it."

The most important task for Christian parents is to instruct, train, and guide their children to follow Christ and do what is right. We won’t know the ultimate result of our work here, but we must do what we should and trust God for the outcome.
