EARLY CHURCH WRITINGS THAT TEACH A RAPTURE‑LIKE EVENT
1️⃣ The Didache (AD 70–120)
The Didache is one of the earliest Christian documents outside the New Testament.
It describes:
-
a sudden appearing of the Lord
-
believers being gathered
-
the wicked facing judgment
It uses the same sequence as 1 Thessalonians 4–5.
The Didache says believers will be “gathered from the four winds” — the same language Jesus uses for the gathering of His people before wrath falls.
This is the earliest post‑apostolic echo of a rapture framework.
2️⃣ Shepherd of Hermas (AD 90–140)
This text was so respected that some early Christians read it in church.
Hermas describes:
-
the righteous being delivered before the great tribulation
-
the wicked being left to face the coming wrath
-
the faithful being “removed” from the coming destruction
This is the earliest explicit statement of escape before tribulation.
Hermas literally says the righteous will “escape the great tribulation” — the same promise Jesus gives in Luke 21:36 and Revelation 3:10.
3️⃣ Irenaeus (AD 130–202)
A disciple of Polycarp, who was a disciple of the apostle John.
Irenaeus writes that:
-
the Church will be “caught up”
-
the Church will be “taken out of the way”
-
the Antichrist will rise after the Church is removed
He uses the same language Paul uses in 2 Thessalonians 2.
Irenaeus also compares the Church to Enoch, who was taken before judgment — a classic rapture typology.
4️⃣ Ephraim the Syrian (AD 306–373)
This is the most explicit early church statement.
Ephraim writes:
“All the saints and elect of God are gathered together before the tribulation, which is to come, and are taken to the Lord.”
This is a direct pre‑tribulation rapture statement, centuries before dispensationalism.
He also says:
-
the Church will be removed
-
the world will face the Antichrist
-
the wrath of God will fall after the removal of believers
This is the same sequence as Revelation 3–6.
5️⃣ Cyprian of Carthage (AD 200–258)
Cyprian writes:
“We who see that terrible things have begun… should consider whether we ought to withdraw from them and take refuge with the Lord.”
He describes believers being taken away before the worst judgments fall.
He compares the Church to:
-
Noah
-
Lot
-
Rahab
All removed before judgment.
Exactly the pattern of the rapture.
6️⃣ The Apostolic Fathers’ Pattern
Even when not using the word “rapture,” the earliest Christians consistently taught:
-
deliverance before wrath
-
removal before judgment
-
gathering of believers
-
the Antichrist rising after the Church is gone
-
the Lord returning for His people suddenly
This is the same structure Paul gives in:
-
1 Thessalonians 4–5
-
1 Corinthians 15
-
John 14
-
Revelation 3:10
The early church didn’t invent this — they simply repeated what the apostles taught.
THE MYTH THAT “NO ONE BELIEVED IN THE RAPTURE UNTIL 1800s” IS FALSE
People who say this:
-
have never read the early church writings
-
confuse “rapture” with “dispensational charts”
-
assume that if the word isn’t used, the doctrine isn’t there
-
ignore the clear pre‑trib statements from the 2nd–4th centuries
The early church believed:
-
Jesus returns for His Church
-
the Church is removed
-
the Antichrist rises
-
judgment falls
-
Jesus returns in glory with His saints
That is the rapture + Second Coming sequence.
